The Geographic Midpoint Between Two Cities

Six city pairs on five continents: where the geographic midpoint falls, and how far it is from the nearest place both cities reach nonstop.

Where to Meet in the Middle by Direct Flight October 24, 2026 · 7 min read · Updated October 24, 2026

The geographic midpoint between two cities is the point halfway along the shortest path between them. For a trip, what matters is whether both cities have a nonstop flight to somewhere near it, and in Midway’s route data that is uncommon once the cities are more than about 2,000 miles apart. Across nearly 60,000 pairs of airports at least 1,000 miles apart, about 4% have a destination served from both within 100 miles of their midpoint.

This page compares the two for six city pairs on five continents. For each pair it gives where the midpoint falls, the nearest airport to it, the nearest destination both cities reach nonstop (no change of plane), and the Midway Point (the shared destination Midway marks as the fairest by distance). The figures come from Midway’s route data as of October 2026, which covers the next twelve months of schedules for the 600 busiest airports. Each example uses one airport per city.

How the midpoint is calculated

The midpoint on this page is the halfway point along the great circle between the two departure airports, which is the shortest path over the Earth’s surface. We calculate it from the airport coordinates in Midway’s airport list, and every distance is in great-circle miles. “Nearest airport” means the closest of the roughly 3,700 airports in that list, whatever their size. A destination counts as shared when both departure airports have a nonstop to it in at least one of the next twelve months, which is the rule Midway applies to a search.

Vancouver and Montreal

Vancouver and Montreal are about 2,290 miles apart, and the midpoint falls 16 miles from Winnipeg’s airport. Winnipeg is on the shared list, with Air Canada nonstops from both cities all year: about 2h45 from Vancouver and 3h to 3h10 from Montreal. It is also the Midway Point. This is the case a midpoint is good for, where a city that both sides serve happens to sit on the line.

Around 50 destinations are served nonstop from both airports, and the rest of the list shows how much luck is involved. Regina, the next shared destination toward the midpoint, has a nonstop from Montreal only from June to September. The two flight times are closest at Dallas-Fort Worth, about 4h10 to 4h20 from Vancouver and 4h10 to 4h35 from Montreal, which is about 1,190 miles from the midpoint.

Oslo and Rome

Oslo and Rome are about 1,270 miles apart. The midpoint is in eastern Germany, 35 miles from Leipzig/Halle airport and 36 miles from Erfurt-Weimar, and neither has a nonstop from Oslo or Rome. Around 100 destinations are served nonstop from both, so the miss costs little. The closest shared destinations to the midpoint are Berlin, Prague and Frankfurt, all within about 160 miles of it.

Prague and Frankfurt are even by flight time, at about 2 hours from each city all year. Berlin is closer to the midpoint and uneven, at 1h35 from Oslo and 2h05 to 2h10 from Rome. Düsseldorf is the Midway Point, about 220 miles from the midpoint, at 1h55 from Oslo and 2h05 to 2h10 from Rome.

Delhi and Tokyo

Delhi and Tokyo Narita are about 3,670 miles apart, and the midpoint falls in north-central China, 46 miles from Qingyang’s airport. Xi’an, the nearest of the 600 busiest airports at about 160 miles, has no nonstop from either city. Around 40 destinations are served nonstop from both, and none of them is close to the midpoint.

The nearest shared destination is Beijing, about 560 miles away, at 6h20 from Delhi and 4h to 4h30 from Narita. Ulaanbaatar is further out, at about 775 miles from the midpoint, and it is the Midway Point: 5h30 from Delhi and 5h30 to 6h from Narita, all year. It is also the shared destination where the two flight times are closest.

Lagos and Nairobi

Lagos and Nairobi are about 2,380 miles apart, and the midpoint falls in northern DR Congo, 44 miles from Gemena’s airport. The nearest of the 600 busiest airports are Kinshasa, Yaoundé and Douala, between about 590 and 730 miles away, and none is served nonstop from both cities. Only around 20 destinations are served nonstop from both.

The nearest shared destination is Kigali, about 760 miles from the midpoint, and Kigali is the Midway Point as well. It is not an even split, at about 5h10 to 5h20 from Lagos and 1h30 from Nairobi. The flight times match in Cairo, about 5 hours from each city, roughly 2,030 miles north of the midpoint. With a list this short, the midpoint does not point at anything, and the shared destinations are the only place to start.

Mexico City and Buenos Aires

Mexico City and Buenos Aires Ezeiza are about 4,600 miles apart. The midpoint is in the Pacific off northern Peru, about 80 miles from Trujillo’s airport, which has no nonstop from either city. Around 20 destinations are served nonstop from both.

Lima is the nearest shared destination, about 340 miles from the midpoint, and Lima is the Midway Point too: about 6h to 6h10 from Mexico City and 4h45 to 4h50 from Buenos Aires, all year. Quito is the next closest, but Ezeiza has a nonstop there only in October 2026. Here the midpoint points in roughly the right direction, and the usable answer is the one large hub on that stretch of coast.

Los Angeles and Sydney

Los Angeles and Sydney are about 7,500 miles apart, and the midpoint falls in the central Pacific, almost exactly on the equator. The nearest airport is on Kiritimati (Christmas Island), about 450 miles away, with no nonstop from either city. Around 25 destinations are served nonstop from both.

The nearest shared destination is Honolulu, about 1,520 miles from the midpoint, at 5h50 to 6h10 from Los Angeles and 9h50 to 10h05 from Sydney. Papeete is about as far from the midpoint, and Papeete is the Midway Point: 8h20 to 8h25 from Los Angeles and 6h55 to 7h15 from Sydney, though the Sydney flight does not run in October or November 2026. The two flight times are closest in Doha, at about 15 to 16 hours from each city, which is fair in the narrowest sense.

Distances are great-circle miles, rounded, measured from the midpoint unless stated. Shared means a nonstop from both airports in at least one of the next twelve months, from Midway’s route data as of October 2026.

How often the midpoint works

The six pairs are examples, so we ran the same comparison on every pair of airports in Midway’s data that are at least 1,000 miles apart and share at least one nonstop destination. That is nearly 60,000 pairs. For each, we measured how far the nearest shared destination is from the midpoint.

In the examples above, the shorter pairs have midpoints inside a network with several hubs nearby, and the longer ones have midpoints over an ocean or a thinly served region. The table shows the same pattern at scale. Past about 3,000 miles, a shared destination near the midpoint is the exception.

Starting from the shared list

In most cases, the midpoint is worth a look only to see which way the shortlist leans. The list to choose from is the set of destinations both airports serve nonstop, compared on the flight time from each side and on the months the routes run. Midway returns that list for up to six departure cities, with the flight time and distance from each, and the guide to meet-in-the-middle tools compares it with midpoint calculators and the manual method.

The Midway Point is one way to pick from that list. Midway scores each shared destination by the average distance from the home cities plus one and a half times the largest gap from that average, then marks the lowest score. A change in March 2026 made it favour destinations roughly equidistant for everyone, rather than the one closest on average. It measures distance, not flight time, which is why it picks Düsseldorf over Prague and Frankfurt for Oslo and Rome, and it knows nothing about fares or visas.

A shared destination near the midpoint is a good sign when there is one, and Vancouver and Montreal show that it happens. For most pairs the list comes first, and the pillar guide to meeting in the middle covers how to narrow it.

Frequently asked questions

How often is there an airport both cities fly to at the midpoint?

Rarely, once the cities are far apart. In Midway's route data, about 1 in 5 airport pairs that are 1,000 to 2,000 miles apart have a shared nonstop destination within 100 miles of the midpoint, and fewer than 1 in 100 pairs that are 3,000 to 5,000 miles apart do.

How is the geographic midpoint between two cities calculated?

It is the point halfway along the great circle between the two cities, which is the shortest path over the Earth's surface. It is equally far from both, but it says nothing about where either city can fly.
