Meet Between Los Angeles and Chicago

Find nonstop destinations from both Los Angeles and Chicago — balanced flight times, seasonal tips, and the best spots for an LAX–ORD meet-up.

Los Angeles and Chicago sit about 1,750 miles apart — far enough that a direct flight is always involved, close enough that the destinations they share in the middle are genuinely accessible for a weekend. The asymmetry between the two airports matters: LAX is one of the busiest international hubs in the country, and O’Hare isn’t far behind. The intersection of nonstop routes from both is large. The trick is finding the destinations where both travelers land in roughly the same amount of time.

Austin is the standout on this list — a 12-minute gap between LAX and ORD is as close to perfectly balanced as any domestic city pair gets.

Top destinations for Los Angeles–Chicago travelers

Austin is the clear anchor destination for this pair. The South Central and Mountain West corridors open up a handful of solid options, ranging from near-perfect balance to workable gaps worth accepting for the right destination.

Austin

The most balanced option on this list by a significant margin: LAX lands in 2h54m, ORD in 3h06m — a gap of just 12 minutes. Austin has enough going on to fill a long weekend without planning: live music on Sixth Street and Red River, a genuinely strong food scene across all price points, and outdoor activities along Barton Creek and the Greenbelt. South Congress is the easiest starting point. Book early if you’re traveling in March during SXSW.

Flight times: Los Angeles: 2h 54m · Chicago: 3h 06m

Denver

Denver is well-balanced (LAX 2h29m, ORD 2h59m — a 30-minute gap) and gives you one of the most versatile arrivals in the country. The city itself has a good food and bar scene — RiNo and LoHi neighborhoods are worth the time — but Denver’s main appeal is as a launching pad. Rocky Mountain National Park is 90 minutes north; ski resorts in Summit County are under two hours. The winter months are the busiest; late September through October is a quieter sweet spot.

Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City doesn’t get much attention as a destination, but the logistics are solid: LAX is 2h57m, ORD is 2h26m — a 31-minute gap. The city has improved significantly over the past 15 years, with the Bricktown entertainment district and a revitalized downtown core. The National Memorial & Museum is one of the more affecting sites in the country. A good option when the goal is low cost and low crowds.

Flight times: Los Angeles: 2h 57m · Chicago: 2h 26m

New Orleans

The gap widens here — LAX is 3h30m, ORD is 2h35m, a 55-minute spread — but New Orleans has a strong enough editorial case to justify it. The food is the reason to go: a po’boy at Domilise’s, a bowl of gumbo at Dooky Chase, beignets at Café Du Monde. The French Quarter and Frenchmen Street fill evenings. October through April is the best window; July and August are brutally hot and humid.

Flight times: Los Angeles: 3h 30m · Chicago: 2h 35m

Kansas City

Kansas City is the most asymmetric option on this list — ORD arrives in 1h44m, LAX in 3h12m, an 88-minute gap. Worth considering if the Chicago traveler is happy to arrive first and get settled. Kansas City barbecue is the attraction: Joe’s Kansas City and Q39 are the benchmarks. The Crossroads Arts District and 18th & Vine jazz neighborhood fill out the trip. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit.

Flight times: Los Angeles: 3h 12m · Chicago: 1h 44m

Further afield

Both LAX and ORD have nonstop service to Mexico and Europe. The international options below are worth considering when the goal is a longer trip rather than a quick meet-up.

Cancún

Cancún is the most accessible international option for this pair: LAX is 4h38m, ORD is 3h56m — a 42-minute gap. The Yucatán peninsula covers a wide range: all-inclusive resorts along the Hotel Zone, cenotes in the interior, Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá and Tulum. The Riviera Maya corridor between Cancún and Tulum is the most visited stretch. November through April is the best window to avoid hurricane season and the late-summer heat.

Flight times: Los Angeles: 4h 38m · Chicago: 3h 56m

Mexico City

Mexico City is close to perfectly balanced in the other direction: LAX is 3h50m, ORD is 4h38m — a 48-minute gap, with Los Angeles arriving first. One of the best food cities in the world, with strong museum and architecture credentials alongside it. Roma Norte and Condesa are the easiest neighborhoods to base from. Altitude is 7,350 feet — give yourself a day to adjust before doing too much.

Flight times: Los Angeles: 3h 50m · Chicago: 4h 38m

London

London is a significant commitment from both cities — LAX is 10h35m, ORD is 7h50m — a gap of 2h45m that puts the LA traveler in the air considerably longer. If London is the destination, the Chicago traveler should plan to arrive a day later or build in recovery time. Both airports have nonstop service to Heathrow. London in May through September is the most reliable window for weather and activity.

Best time to go

For Austin, spring (March–April) and fall (October–November) are the most pleasant windows — summer heat is real, and March brings SXSW crowds. Denver works year-round depending on priorities: ski season runs December through April, and summer hiking is at its best July through September. New Orleans is best booked October through February — spring starts getting humid, and summer is best avoided. Mexico City and Cancún are good year-round destinations, with November through April being the peak season for both. For London, May through September has the most daylight and the most predictable weather.
